Alpine Intercoolers

Turbochargers produce a lot of power, but they also generate incredible amounts of heat. Unfortunately much of this heat is passed to the intake charge which substantially reduces power potential. One remedy to this situation is to use Alpine intercoolers. Aftermarket Alpine intercoolers are essentially radiators for your compressed intake charge. They use fresh cool air to reduce the charge temperature, and as we all know dense cold air makes a lot more power. Intercoolers are also an important safety factor on your motor. If your intake charge gets too hot it can cause premature detonation which can quickly destroy a motor and cause an expensive rebuild. By keeping the charge cool you can safely run your vehicle hard at not have to worry about pinging and detonation. If you have a larger aftermarket turbo you should look for a high-performance Alpine intercooler to match. The larger the intercooler the better its capacity to dissipate heat, so if you will be driving in competition or in extreme weather conditions we recommend running the largest intercooler you can fit.

Q: How do you install an intercooler?
A: Intercoolers are installed using piping kits. If there is a kit available for your car, intercoolers are placed in their desired location and piping routed to both the throttle body and the turbocharger side. Sometimes piping kits are not available and custom piping will need to be made.

Q: What is an intercooler? Why buy an intercooler?
A: Both superchargers and turbochargers heat air as they compress it. This heat can hurt the combustion process by changing the density of air entering the intake manifold from a cool charge to a hot one. An intercooler is used to lower the temperature of the air and in turn increase the density of that air, so more air can enter the cylinders and create more power.

Q: Do intercoolers work for any vehicle? Is there any pre-condition needed for me to buy an intercooler?
A: Intercoolers are sold either individually as universal cores or as kits with piping and couplers included. Turbocharged and supercharged engines can utilize intercoolers effectively while naturally aspirated vehicles do not have use for them.
