By the 1950s air filter technology began to improve with oil-bath style filters gaining popularity on OEM vehicles. Today most vehicles rely on paper style elements. While paper elements are pretty good at filtering they tend to restrict airflow. Many aftermarket Scion XD air filters utilize a cloth or gauze element that allow for increased air flow, while still filtering out the dirty air particulates. If you want a boost in performance while still keeping your engine clean, high performance Scion XD air filters are the way to go.

Q: How do you install an air filter?
A: It depends on what type of car you have and what type of air filter you get. A drop-in air filter is installed by opening up your stock air box, pulling out your factory paper filter and replacing it with the new high flow unit. If you opt for the open-element air filter, then your whole air box should be removed and replaced with the new filter. If the filter is universal (not vehicle-specific), slight modifications using reducers and couplers may be needed depending on the size of the filter and intake hosing.
