While paper elements are pretty good at filtering they tend to restrict airflow. Many aftermarket BMW 7 Series air filters utilize a cloth or gauze element that allow for increased air flow, while still filtering out the dirty air particulates. If you want a boost in performance while still keeping your engine clean, high performance BMW 7 Series air filters are the way to go.
