Replacing the Echo in the U.S., the second generation Toyota Yaris (known as the Vitz in most other markets) offered a peppy 1.5L VVT-i engine and great stylings without breaking the bank. A popular kei car (subcompact) overseas, the Yaris has also been popular as a track car due to its small size and light weight. As you can see here, with a little bit of work (a body kit, carbon fiber hood, and aftermarket wheels), and maybe even a turbo kit, you can have a killer Yaris that won’t cost a fortune.
