A: Hood dampers are miniature gas pressurized shocks that are used to support your hood when it is open, and to prevent it from slamming down when you go to close it. These supports are simple in design but perform an important task. Overtime lift supports can lose their charge so that they can no longer fully support the weight of your hood. You might first find this out the hard way by getting hit in the head as the hood tries to close on top of you. Once your hood starts to creep down there is not turning back, your dampers are shot.
