The turbo cars had an elaborate exhaust system the drove the turbo unit which sat right beside the carberator on top of the intake manifold. The unit was a hot point under the hood so there was a protective heat shield placed under the hood over the unit. This probably protected the paint from any dis-coloration due to the heat.
