There are some important details about a few of those safety features worth mentioning here.

Front Safety Belt Height Adjustment
The driver and front passenger can adjust the height of the shoulder belt so the belt rests across the middle of thier shoulder. Simply press the button on the adjuster, and lower or raise the adjuster to fit your size. After making the adjustment, the button should release and the adjust should be locked in place. Pull your safety belt to be sure the ajuster is in the locked position.

Belt Minder Deactivation
The Belt Minder is the electronic warning system to remind you to use your safety belt system. It's a combination of a sounding chime and the illuminating warning light on your instrument panel. By default, the Belt Minder is active. When active, if the driver's safety belt is not buckled in about 5 seconds from the time the warning light has turned off, the warning light will again illuminate and the alarm chime will sound for 6 seconds, repeating itself every 30 seconds for the next 5 minutes, or until you buckle your seat belt.

NOTE: You and your passengers should always wear the seat belts!

You can De-Activate the Belt Minder two ways. First, you can deactivate it temporarily for your current "run cycle", that is after you have started your car and it's still running. Second, you completely deactivate the Belt Minder so that it never reminds you again, or at least until your reactivate it...

The first method, temporary deactivation, or one time disable: After you have started your vehicle, buckle and then un-buckle your safety belt. Be sure to buckle back up.... This will disable the Belt Minder only for that ignition cycle.

The second method, permanent deactivation: There are 9 steps you need to follow to deactivate or activate your Belt Minder system. Before doing so, make sure that:

  • The partking brake is set.
  • The car is in Park(automatic), Neutral(manual).
  • The ignition is OFF.
  • All doors are closed.
  • The driver's safety belt is un-buckled.
  • The Focus parking and Focus headlights are OFF.

Then follow these 9 steps:

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON, but DO NOT START.
  2. Wait for the safety belt warning light to go OFF(1-2 minutes).
  3. Steps 3-5 MUST be completed within 60 seconds!

  4. Buckle, then un-buckle the driver's safety belt 3 times, ending with the belt un-buckled.
  5. Turn on the headlights, turn off the headlights.
  6. Buckle, then un-buckle the driver's safety belt 3 times, ending with the belt un-buckled.
  7. After step 5, the Safety Belt Warning Light will be turned on for 3 seconds.

  8. Within 7 seconds of the safety belt warning light turning OFF, buckle then un-buckle the safety belt.
  9. This will disable the Belt Minder if it is currently enabled, or enable the Belt Minder if it is currently disabled.

  10. Confirmation of the disabling of the Belt Minder is provided by flashing the safety belt warning light 4 times per seconds for 3 seconds.
  11. Confirmation of the enabling of the Belt Minder is provided by flashing the safety belt warning light 4 times per seconds for 3 seconds, followed by 3 seconds with the safety belt light off, then followed by flashing the safety belt light 4 times per second for 3 seconds again.
  12. After confirmation, the deactivation/activation of the Belt Minder procedure is complete.

Whew!

Fuel Shut Off Switch Fuel Pump Shut-Off Switch
In the event of an accident the emergency fuel shut off switch may activate. If your car's engine cranks, but will not start, you should try resetting this switch. Do so only with your ignition in the "off" position and after you have determined there are no fuel leaks. The switch is located on the front passenger's foot area, behind what is called the "kick panel".

Interior Luggage Compartment Release(Emergency Exit)
You've probably seen the commercial on TV, the Focus trapped in a parking spot so tight, the occupants cannot open the doors. What do they do? They escape out the trunk!

Depending on the Focus model, the "T" shaped handle is located on the luggage compartment door lid, or near the Focus tail lights. The handle is made with a glow in the dark material which will illuminate the handle if it has been briefly exposed to ambient light. Simply pull the handle to open your trunk from the inside.

NOTE: Children should be taught to NOT play in vehicles. Keep your vehicles doors and trunk locked and your keys out of reach of children!

Under The Hood

Ok, so this page is not strictly about what is "under the hood" of your new 2001 Ford Focus. This page will introduce you to some of the more important things you need to know about caring for your new Focus. We couldn't possibly recreate the entire owner's manual here, so we'll highlite just a few things. Let's start with fuel, since your car cannot run without it.

NOTE: Always refer to your official Ford Scheduled Maintenance Guide. Documented from the 2001 Ford Focus Owners Manual!

Fuel System
The Ford Focus has an interesting little feature pertaining to the fuel filler cap. There's actually a warning light on your instrument panel that illuminates if you have not properly installed after refueling. That's a nice little reminder, as I'm sure just about everyone at one time or another has forgot to put the fuel cap back on after filling up. If for some reason you have to replace your fuel filler cap, be sure to replace it with a genuine Ford or Motorcraft cap. Refer to your official Ford Owner's Guide, page 227, where it warns you about potential damage and voiding your warranty if you do not replace your cap with the proper replacement. It all has to do pressure and vacuum in the fuel tank!

The octane recommendation for your Ford Focus is 87 Octane regular unleaded. Premium grades, octane higher than 87 are NOT recommended by Ford. Ford always does not recommend you use any lower octane fuels, 86 or less that may be sold in higher altitude areas. 87 Octane is all you need in your Focus. Do not use any fuel additive either, especially those containing metallic compounds, or manganese based compounds(MMT). According to Ford, it should not be necessary to add any aftermarket products to your fuel and the owner's manual cautions you that repairs to correct any defects as the result of using such products may not be covered by your warranty.

Ford does approve the use of gasolines that improve air quality, those that contain ozygenates up to 10% ethanol or 15% MTBE. DO NOT however use gas that contains methanol, which could damage critical fuel system components.

Engine Oil
Ford recommends using SAE 5W-20 engine oil for optimum fuel economy, durability and performance. The engine oil should be "Certified For Gasoline Engines" by the American Petroleum Institue(API). That's a little logo that is displayed on the oil container. Ford specifically recommends the Motorcraft SAE 5W-20, WSS-M2C153-H product or equivalent. They also recommend the Motorcraft oil filters. Ford does not recommend the use of any oil treatments or additives, as they may, under certain conditions, lead to engine damage not covered by your warranty. You should always change your oil and filter according to the scheduled maintenance guide.

Engine Cooling System
If your Focus has the 2.0L Zetec engine, your have what is referred to as "fail-safe cooling". This is a handy system, should for some reason your engine's coolant supply become depleted, the fail-safe cooling allows the vehicle to be driven temporarily before any incremental component damage occurs. The fail-safe traveling distance depends on ambient temperatures, vehicle load, and terrain.

If your engine begins to overheat, the coolant temperature gauge will move into the red area, and the multi-function automatic transaxle/cooling system light on your instrument panel will be illuminated. When the engine reaches a preset over-temperature condition, the fail-safe cooling system will activate. The engine will switch to alternating cylinder operation, each disabled cylinder acts as an air pump, thereby cooling the engine.

When this happens, your vehicle will still operate, however... the engine power will be limited, since you are not running on all four cylinders, the air conditioning system will be disabled, and your check engine light on the instrument panel will illuminate. Continued operation will increase the engine temperature and eventually the engine will shut off, and you will loose your power steering and bracking. If at all possible, you should pull off the road and let the engine cool. If you car does shut off, and once your engine cools down, you should be able to start the car again. You should however get your car to a service facility as soon as possible.

Battery
Your Focus is equipped with a Motorcraft maintenance-free battery, which under normal conditions does not require additional water during it's life. However, for severe usage or in high temperature climates, you should check the battery electrolyte level.

If your electrolyte level is low, you can add plain tap water, as long as it is not "hard water", water with a high mineral or alkali level. If possible, use distilled water. Do not overfill the cell levels. For longer, trouble-free operation, keep the top of your battery clean and dry, make sure your battery cables are tightly fastened to the battery terminals.

If you see any corrosion on the battery cables, or terminals, remove the cables from the terminals and clean with a wire brush. You can neutralize the acid with a solution of baking soda and water. After you have cleaned both the terminals and the connectors, reinstall the cables and apply a small amount of quality grease to the top of each battery terminal to prevent corrosion.

Your car is electronically controlled by a computer, and some control conditions are maintained by power from the battery. If your battery has been disconnected, or a new battery installed, the engine must relearn its idle conditions before it will drive properly. Here is the process to "relearn" your engine idle:

  1. Set your parking brake.
  2. Put the gearshift in P(Park) if an automatic, neutral if a manual transmission.
  3. Turn off all accessories and start your engine.
  4. Let the engine idle for at least 1 minute.
  5. The relearning process will automatically complete as you drive your vehicle.
  • If you do not allow your engine to relear itself, the idle quality of your vehicle may be adversely affected until the idle is relearned.
  • If the battery has been disconnected or if a new battery has been installed, the clock and the preset radio stations must be reset.
