Chevy Camaro Continues To Wow & Inspire
Camaro fans are beaming from ear to ear, thankful not only that their favorite ride is back in production, but that it is also taking it to the Ford Mustang, its chief nemesis. Not only is the latest generation Camaro faster than the Mustang, but it is also more fuel efficient and arguably better styled than the steed. Pent up demand is also fueling Camaro sales with 8000 units sold in recent months, beating the Mustang there too.
Customer demand is not only impacting sales, but it is causing GM to sit up and take notice at what people really want in their Camaros.
Initially, GM resisted calls to produce a Transformers inspired model -- based on the popular movie icon – but soon reversed itself to build a special edition Camaro featuring such Transformer design cues as the Autobot shield on side panels, wheel caps, and interior console; Transformer logos on door sills and hood stripes; and a high gloss black center rally strip. That car is offered with the Rally Yellow LT or SS models and can be combined with the RS appearance package.
Bright Shining Camaro
The Camaro has managed to become one of the brightest lights for GM, a company which navigated its way through bankruptcy in 2009. Thanks to tens of billions of federal bailout money, the automaker has managed to survive. Camaro sales have certainly helped matters, stimulating showroom traffic while bolstering the Chevy brand.
What will GM do for an encore? Will the Camaro survive a turbulent industry or be canceled when its life cycle ends around 2014? Though no one can say for certain what the Camaro's place will be, having at least one fuel efficient model certainly helps its cause.
The base V6 returns 18 mpg around town, but a whopping 29 mpg on the highway thanks to the combination of a 3.6L variable valve timed V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. That combination maximizes fuel economy and power to deliver the most efficient engine of its kind.
We Want A Convertible!
A preproduction Camaro convertible was previewed to dealers in October 2009, offsetting fears that this model would never be built. Earlier in the year, cash flow problems revealed that the convertible's production was in jeopardy, but the recent dealer reveal and statement by Chevy management that the car is a "go" has eased those fears. Though the most recent March 2011 release is in jeopardy, the Camaro convertible will join the coupe in the near future.
Alas, the return of the Z28 remains doubtful, given GM's need to concentrate on bringing out both the Chevrolet Cruze and the Volt as well as shoring up Cadillac, Buick and GMC while closing down or selling off Pontiac, Saturn, Saab and Opel. Perhaps when the automaker has fewer challenges on its plate the Z28 will make its return, the hottest Camaro ever built and one befitting the coupe's heritage.
