💧 Brake Fluids: DOT Ratings Explained

  • DOT 3: Glycol-based, common in older vehicles. Lower boiling point, not ideal for performance.
  • DOT 4: Higher boiling point than DOT 3, widely used in modern cars. Good balance of cost and performance.
  • DOT 5: Silicone-based, doesn’t absorb moisture. Not compatible with glycol systems. Often used in specialty or classic cars.
  • DOT 5.1: Glycol-based but with a very high boiling point. Perfect for high-performance and racing applications.

Tip: DOT 3, 4, and 5.1 are glycol-based and can mix, but DOT 5 (silicone) must remain separate.
