Focus MAC Short Ram Intake

Other than replacing the stock air filter itself, removing the stock air system and replacing them with the MAC Kit or any "shorty" style cool air system is probably one of the easiest performance modifications you can do. Requiring only a flathead and phillips screwdriver to remove the stock air box top and air duct tubes, and a 8mm and 10mm socket or wrench to remove the battery cables and tighten the new kit clamps. Getting the stock system off is actually harder than putting the new system on! As always, take your time and be patient!
Kit Parts: Elbow sleeve, Upper Tube, Tube to MAF sleeve, MAF Mounting bracket, MAF Mounting bracket feet, 5 clamps, PCV extension tube, hi-flo filter.
Tools required: Flathead screwdriver, 8mm & 10mm socket, #25 Torx bit.
Time to complete: 20 - 30 minutes

Stock Air Duct/Box Removal:
- Remove the battery box top, simply pops off.
- Disconnect your battery using the 10mm socket.
- Remove the battery tie-down strap using the 10mm socket that screws into the bottom of the box.
- Remove the battery from the car.
- Using your screwdriver, remove the clamps that hold the upper air duct to the throttle body and MAF.
- Using your screwdriver, unscrew the air box top.
- Using the #25 Torx bit, unbolt the MAF from the stock air box top.
- Discard your stock air filter.
- Disconnect the PCV tube from the stock air box. Leave attached to the valve cover...
- Remove the air box bottom. Give it a good pull, it is only attached using rubber grommets.
- Leave your stock snorkle and lower tubes in place.
- You are now ready to install the MAC Kit

MAC CAI Installation:
- With the stock system completely removed, unplug the wire connector from the Mass Air Sensor(MAF)
- Bolt on the MAF to the MAC MAF bracket.
- Install the feet on the MAF bracket.
- Install the MAF bracket into the fitting in the car.
- Run the PCV extension tube from the MAF bracket fitting to the stock PCV tubing.
- Attach the MAC rubber elbow sleeve to the throttle body and tighten the lower clamp.
- Put the 2nd rubber sleeve on the new MAC Tube, do not tighten the clamps.
- Install the new tube into the rubber elbow sleeve and the MAF.
- Tighten all the clamps.
- Install the new MAC Filter to the end of the MAF bracket.
- Tighten the clamp on the filter.
Finishing up...
- Check all your connections.
- Re-connect your battery terminals.
- Start your car.
- Let your car idle.
- Drive your car as normal, and occasionally at WOT "wide open throttle". Your car's computer will make adjustments for the additional air that your car is getting. Usually takes several drive cycles of normal driving, highway driving, WOT throttle passing, etc. for your computer to get completely re-adjusted. You will notice new power right away however!!

| Initial Assessment: (May 2002) The MAC product is a good quality product. Material and workmanship is very good, and a perfect fit, not like those "generic" $20 intake kits you find on eBay. Do yourself a favor and avoid those! Installation was very straight forward and easy to do. The instructions that come with the kit could have been better, but then that's why we put this How-to article together :)
Performance is much better than I had expected. The engine certainly does have more power through the powerband. Although as with most "short ram" intake kits, when it's really hot out, there is a noticable "lag" from tag off. At highway speeds however, the kit really kicks in. Sound, that all important aspect to intake and exhaust modifications, very impressive. The MAC kit adds a nice growl from under hood. Compared to the Iceman, a much better sound! |
