Willowbank Performance Street Car Shoot-Out 20th October - [14 images] - This is an annual drag meet held at Willowbank Raceway featuring all types of cars, from dedicated drag cars to V8's to kit cars to fours and rotaries. While V8's tended to dominate, there were also some very quick turbo fours and rotors on the day which made it all worthwhile.

Datsun Cruise 23rd July 2005 - Gold Coast Hinterland

This cruise was held on Saturday 23rd July and was a Gold Coast Hinterland cruise. The route was similar to the cruise held in March 2003 but it was run in the reverse direction with a few different roads thrown in for variety. We met at Oxenford for a midday start, and at first it seemed as if the weather just wasn't going to co-operate with spitting rain and menacing looking clouds. Datsun owners from the Gold Coast, Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and even northern New South Wales turned up for the day, with a total of about 20 cars, most of them of course being 1600's (13 in total), with a few 1200 coupes, a couple of 1200 utes, a 200b SSS and even a slightly decrepit looking 720 ute! Despite the weather, everyone was keen to get going and so we started off up Tamborine Mountain.

The weather ended up holding, with just a few spits of rain but nothing any well set-up Datto couldn't handle. With a short stop at the top of Mount Tamborine, the cruise continued up and over the back of the mountain on some more fun windy roads down to the township of Tamborine, then on through some straight roads to Canungra. Stopping for a rest and a well-earned Datsun gossip session, we then continued on up to Beechmont (with a great clear run all the way), and then back down the range to the Hinze Dam. Unfortunately our regular photo spot was occupied by some kind of watersport people, but we all parked up on the hill overlooking the Dam and conveniently close to the kiosk.

After much more Datto discussion and some refreshments, some went home from there but most of the cars continued on towards Southport and the Broadwater Carpark for some more photos.

Overall I think a great day was had by all - the weather didn't hinder the cruise too much and there were no major (or even minor) casualties. We are looking forward to the next cruise which should be some time after Powercruise and Jamboree.

Gold Coast Hinterland Cruise - Saturday 29th March 2003

Thanks to Ollie for taking some of the photos while I was driving. ;)

The day started at about 9.30 am where we all met at the Broadwater Car Park at Southport on the Gold Coast. Friday was a very dreary day weather-wise so everyone had their fingers crossed for some fine weather on Saturday, and it must have worked because it turned out to be mostly a fine day.

We left for the cruise at about 10.30 and headed out to the Hinze Dam for a photoshoot and BBQ lunch. There were almost 30 cars present with 1600's comprising almost half of that number and the remainder being made up of 1200's, a 1000 coupe, bluebirds, a Navara ute (complete with VG30 turbo), an SR20 200b, a 200SX and a couple of Z's.

Canungra

After the yummy BBQ (thanks Peter!) we headed off towards Beechmont on some great uphill windy roads (which thankfully were mostly deserted so there were minimal delays) and past impressive views and scenery. After Beechmont we headed to the small township of Canungra for some fuel, then on towards Tamborine via a good stretch of straight highway road.

Then it was uphill again on the way up to Tamborine mountain, with some brief light rain providing a section of interesting slippery roads! At the top we stopped at a Rotary lookout (awesome view - see panorama below) then headed back down the mountain towards the Gold Coast.

Overall I think everyone enjoyed themselves and I had a great time doing the recce runs.

These are photos of the two Datsuns that I currently own - the CA18 1600 and my new 1200 coupe. The white 1600 is going to be sold eventually and the money will be put into making the 1200 a turbo beast, as it's currently pretty much standard, though in very good condition. The Sigma wheels from the 1600 are now on the 1200, but I am hoping to eventually replace them with a set of Superlites as they still technically belong to Andrew.

This is from when I owned the 1600 and the stocko 1200 Sedan. I later sold the 1200 to buy tyres for the Sigma turbo wheels for the 1600 and pay off a few other things.

Summer Cruise 2002 - 14th December

We had a large turnout of datto's for this event, I think 42 were present at one stage which included lots of 1600's, a 1200 ute, 120Y's, 200B's a couple of skylines and bluebirds etc. After meeting at North Brissy we cruised up through the Sunshine Coast hinterland through Melaney and stopped for a BBQ lunch at Montville. Some of us then continued on to Nambour to a dyno comp, then finally down to Maroochydore for a quick cruise around the streets before heading home.

This meet was a huge success and we're all looking forward to the next one, which will probably be near the Gold Coast. Keep watching the QPDC website for details.

Fast Fours Jamboree 2002

Fast Fours Jamboree 2002This year's event promised to be huge and it was, so much so that they have decided that next year will be a 2-day event - finally! Hopefully we will see some more events added too. The drag racing was very stop-start, due to a large number of breakdowns in the early evening, but eventually we got to see some very quick times, including two 7-second runs.

There were masses of people there and some very tidy cars. I tried to get most the the 1600's on film (STILL no digital camera hence the lack of more photos) and there are some videos on their way soon.

the car when we first bought it after cutting out the rusty rear guards after doing a bit of stripping on the rear... we then decided to do the whole car! notice the new sheet metal in the rear guards front guards off and body rubbed back

the impact was mainly on the drivers side luckily the 'datsun' badge that sits above the number plate fell off the day before! the impact  probably shortened the car by a few inches

Willowbank Drag Combat 2002

Organised by the Auto Salon people, [cabin], it was rained out on the Saturday and postponed until the next day, Sunday 26th May 2002. The only cars allowed to enter were those made after 1986 and those that were fuel injected, which meant there was a sad lack lack of dattos and other older rigs but I guess that was the rule. Another 'rule' was that you weren't allowed to take video cameras into the place so I thought I'd better play it safe and leave it in the car, so sorry folks, no vids this time!

There were heaps of Skylines, Silvias and 180's, and also Lancer GSR's and some front wheel drive cars. The main feature of the day was HKS's GTR drag car from Japan, which has the record for the fastest 4 wheel drive car in the world! I think they were hoping to break some more records on the day but just missed out this time running a best time of 7.8 secs at almost 300 km/hr, their best ever time being 7.6 ( I think). There were also some other very quick Aussie cars there too like the Rotormaster series VI RX7, running very low 8's, and a yellow GSR that ran a flat 10 with room for improvement.

Since we were suffering from datto withdrawl symptoms we had a walk around the car park and spotted a few nice examples, like the gold 1600 wagon below. I now have a new respect for wagons, they can look very sweet once done up!

Overall it was a pretty good day, though I think if it hadn't been rained out the day before there may have been a more cars competing. Seeing the HKS car run was something I will never forget though. Enjoy the pics, sorry there aren't more but until I get a digital camera I have to curb my film consumption! :)

The Performance Street Car Shoot-Out 2001

This event is held each year at Willowbank Raceway, Queensland, and is becoming one of the largest annual events on the Queensland drag racing calendar. This one-day event features a show'n'shine and qualifying racing during the day, with eliminators and 'dial-your-own' drag racing towards the evening.

The racing is divided into classes, including 4-cyinder, rotary, 6-cylinder, kit cars, and about six V8 classes as they outnumber the other types of cars by so many. The fastest pass on the day was a 7.06 @ 200 mph by some V8 thing with a huge supercharger sticking out the bonnet (I guess it's obvious I don't know much about V8's! :) ).

There were a few fours, sixes and rotaries there though so it did break the monotony of those rumbling 8's. Here are a few pics from the day...

This was a pretty good race between Jim Whitehurst's VL Calais 'BOOSTN' and a very quick Skyline GT-R. Both cars ran in the 10's.

Samantha Kilroe-Smith's Toyota 20-valve turbo powered Corolla impressed everyone with a very speedy 11.9 second @ 121 mph pass, moving her up to second in the FWD Australian records.

This very nice SR20DET-powered Datsun 1600 ran low 12's.

The Mazfix Series 6 RX7 ran the usual 8-second passes, but unfortunately the previous record of 7.99 @ 167.79 could not be matched on the day.

This Mitsubishi Lancer GSR Evo III looked very promising, but unfortunately just couldn't get the gear changes happening on the day. Once that is sorted however, the car should be good for 10-second passes.

A beautifully-presented TX3 spotted in the show'n'shine event, it had some great custom bodywork without being over the top.
