Jeep Patriot Reviews

The Jeep brand has long represented off road utility with its Wrangler model recognized as one of the best for navigating mud pits, traversing beaches and conquering other terrain. Introduced for the 2007 model year, the Jeep Patriot and its sibling Jeep Compass share the same platform underpinning the Dodge Caliber, a compact crossover model.

Off Road Package

Certain four wheel drive versions of the Jeep Patriot are trail-rated despite the vehicle being built on a car chassis. A continuously variable transmission is offered with Freedom Drive II equipped Patriots, enabling this model to gain better traction off road, navigate through low lying watery surfaces and maneuver with ease.

The Jeep Patriot also has the distinction of being the lowest priced sport utility vehicle on the market. Along with the Compass, the Patriot has been one of the few bright spots for Chrysler as it seeks to recover from its historic drop in sales and revamping.

Jeep Patriot Reviews

Jeep Patriot reviews from automotive critics have been mixed reflecting the different ways people tend to look at this compact model. Read on for some snippets from select reviews:

Edmunds tells its readers that the Jeep Patriot has a noisy engine, a low quality interior and limited cargo capacity. Yet, its available off road package “...makes it worth a look for avid bushwhackers.”

The Truth About Cars concluded their own Jeep Patriot review in customary and biting fashion saying, “If Jeep is aiming the Patriot at the CR-V, Rav4 and Escape, they’re in big trouble. With its Playmobil interior, gutless engine and questionable handling, the Patriot is far better off road than on.” And that wasn't saying much as TTAC also took exception with the Patriot's limited range on difficult terrain.

The New York Times chose to focus on the Patriot's good points in their review saying, “On twisty roads and maneuvering around-town, the Patriot feels light and nimble,” while also noting “You can hit a bump with one wheel without your head being tossed. You can hear the tires hitting the expansion strips on the freeway, but you can't feel it.”

Left Lane News gave this Jeep model surprising high marks while noting that the Patriot isn’t perfect. "But it’s a brilliant example of what can happen when an automaker puts quality and design above all else. Inside and out, it’s a good looking, upscale-feeling vehicle that, while it might not represent the Jeep of yore, is nonetheless a must-see standout in its class."

Short Life

Already the benefit of a mid-cycle refresh, don't look for the Jeep Patriot to be around much beyond the 2012 model year. Chrysler has already said that the model will be replaced, one of many Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler vehicles that will soon be underpinned by Fiat platforms.
