Ford Focus ZX5 Alive!
The Ford Focus family has featured quite a few models down through the years including stylish ZX versions which helped to give the Focus line a sporty sub-model. The ZX2, ZX3, ZX4, and ZXW each were part of the Focus line for a time, but no longer used after the 2006 model year.
The Ford Focus ZX5 joined the line for the 2002 model year, a surprisingly well appointed model with a number of decent standard features and available options. A power moon roof was made available, the first time that this option was offered across the Focus line, while other well thought out touches such as generous sized cupholders, map pockets, and a passenger safety package were made standard.
Optionally, the Ford Focus ZX5 offered a six disc CD changer; but other standard features included leather wrapped steering wheel; air conditioning; power windows and locks; keyless entry; and electronic speed control. Clearly, the compact Ford Focus ZX4 was well appointed, offering many amenities not offered by competing models at that time.
Standard engine for the Ford Focus ZX5 was its Zetec DOHC four-cylinder, which produced 130 horsepower and 135 lb-ft of torque. Enthusiasts were pleased with that engine as it offered more oomph than the stock SOHC engine which produced 110 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque.
Every Ford Focus ZX5 came with six-spoke, 16-inch aluminum wheels; P205/50HR-16 tires; and with the rear seat folded down, some 19 cubic feet of storage space.
Besides the peppy engine and sleek design, what really helped the Ford Focus RX5 to stand out was its sweet shifting five-speed manual transmission, though a four-speed automatic was optional. That first combination helped moved the Focus from zero to sixty in about nine seconds, not particularly fast by today's standards, but not a sluggard either.
Just wait 'til ZX faithful feast their eyes on what Ford has planned for the Focus come 2011 as there will be three models offered from the start: a four door sedan, five door wagon, and a pure electric model.
But Ford may not stop there especially if it finds a way to beat tight US emissions requirements. The Ford Focus RS, a car featuring a robust 2.5L I5 engine and producing 305 horsepower/325 lb-ft of torque is currently roaming highways and byways of Europe. You thought that the ZX series was fast, but this baby knows how to crank it out.
In the event that the RS is too much for stringent US regs, expect that an upcoming Focus will feature Ford's EcoBoost engine technology, with a turbocharged twin fuel injection 1.6L I4 powering select models. In any case, Ford is looking at giving the Focus some much needed attention, giving Ford Focus ZX5 enthusiasts one more reason to consider the line in years to come.
