The New BMW 1 Series
March 23, 2004
Source: BMW AG
BMW is poised to shake up the compact executive segment with the arrival of the new 1 Series. Featuring four engines, three gearboxes and rear-wheel drive, a combination not found in any of its competitors, the BMW 1 Series makes its entrance in autumn 2004 and will immediately offer a new benchmark to driving dynamics in its class.
A 1.6-litre petrol engine producing 150Nm of torque at 4,300rpm powers the entry-level BMW 116i. The 115bhp unit achieves a zero to 62mph time of 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 125mph. Even with this high level of performance, the 116i achieves an economical fuel consumption of 37.7mpg.
The high-performance four-cylinder petrol model is the BMW 120i with its 150bhp and 200Nm (at 3,600rpm) 2.0-litre VALVETRONIC petrol engine. Light and nimble, the 120i covers zero to 62mph in 8.7 seconds before going on to achieve a maximum speed of 135mph.
The BMW 1 Series launch line-up is completed with two versions of the powerful yet frugal 2.0-litre common rail diesel engine. The 122bhp BMW 118d averages 50.4mpg while posting a zero to 62mph time of 10 seconds and reaching a top speed of 125mph. The higher-performance 163bhp BMW 120d achieves 49.6mpg yet is capable of a 7.9 second zero to 62mph time and a 137mph top speed. Instant turbo power delivered smoothly to the red line results in the 120d posting sharper performance figures than its 2.0-litre petrol equivalent.
In-gear overtaking in both diesel models should prove rapid thanks to a maximum torque of 280Nm and 340 Nm respectively, much of this urge available from a low 2,000rpm. Both diesel-engined derivatives and the two petrol units are EU4 emission compliant.
Power is delivered to the road via a six-speed manual in 118d, 120d and 120i models, while the 116i has a five-speed manual gearbox. An optional six-speed automatic will also be offered on 120i and 120d models.
Although a new car in a new premium segment, the 1 Series has the traditional BMW design trademarks – the front kidney grille, double headlamps and ‘Hofmeister kink’ on the C-pillar all feature. These punctuate a genuinely head-turning styling that ensures the new 1 Series will stand out amongst its competitors.
After slipping behind the wheel and firing up the engine via a starter button, the driver will go on to enjoy BMW’s renowned 50:50 weight distribution and front engine, rear wheel drive set-up – unique in this class. Coupled with a technically elaborate aluminium front axle and five-link rear suspension, this ensures optimum handling and traction, and the most invigorating drive in the compact executive segment. A drag coefficient of just 0.29 helps the new BMW 1 Series slip through the air with maximum efficiency and the minimum of noise. Standard fit 16-inch run-flat tyres also mean the days of motorway hard shoulder tyre changes are over.
Measuring just 4.23 metres long, but with a relatively long wheelbase of 2.66 metres, driving dynamics have been cleverly worked into a practical four-seater. The new 1 Series offers ample shoulder and legroom for rear passengers and, thanks to split fold rear seats that fold virtually flat, a similarly generous luggage capacity of between 330 to 1150 litres of storage space.
Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Dynamic Brake Control and Electronic Differential Lock help ensure the 1 Series provides the highest standards of active safety without impacting unnecessarily on driving enjoyment. An airbag system that includes head airbags for all occupants means the new BMW 1 Series also meets the most stringent passive safety requirements.
The high level of standard safety features combined with structural integrity means that the new 1 Series is clearly aiming for five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test.
Meanwhile, optional extras include Bluetooth capability, sports seats with backrest width adjustment, acoustic Park Distance Control at the front and the rear and Bi-xenon headlights. The pioneering iDrive controller when mated to a navigation system is also an option. Keyless access and voice-activated radio and navigation systems will appear after launch.
Prices for the all-new 1-Series will be announced later in the spring.

Flat Rock, Mich., U.S.A. - Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today announced the start of U.S. production of the MAZDA6 Sport Wagon and MAZDA6 5-Door. In a ribbon-cutting ceremony held today at AutoAlliance International, Inc. (AAI), officials from Mazda, AAI and Ford Motor Company oversaw the first production vehicles to reach the end of the assembly line and leave the factory. The Sport Wagon and 5-Door models will join the popular MAZDA6 Sports Sedan in Mazda dealerships across the country in late March.
Building on the momentum of the successful launch of the MAZDA6 Sports Sedan, the MAZDA6 Sport Wagon and 5-Door models will offer more variety for consumers who desire extra versatility and style, but still yearn for the "soul of a sports car." All Sport Wagons come equipped with a 220-horsepower DOHC V-6 engine, and, keeping true to Mazda's Zoom-zoom credo, offer both a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional five-speed automatic. The MAZDA6 5-Door, like the sedan, comes with either a 160-horsepower I-4 or the 220-horsepower V-6 (both engines available with either the standard manual transmission or the optional automatic).
Before a crowd of nearly 2,000 AAI employees and local government officials, Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO of MNAO, congratulated plant employees: "From the start of production of the MAZDA6 sedan over a year ago, this team has turned out an exceptional vehicle earning Mazda the highest-rated new vehicle nameplate in the entire 2003 J.D. Power and Associates' APEAL study."
Phil Spender, president and CEO of AAI, added, "We are extremely proud to be building these exciting new vehicles and are looking forward to a very smooth and successful launch."
Masaharu Yamaki, managing executive officer of Mazda Motor Corporation and Mark Schultz, group vice president, Ford Asia-Pacific operations, were also on hand to welcome the new additions to the MAZDA6 family. "The addition of the two new body types will further strengthen the MAZDA6 lineup in North America by offering consumers more choices," said Yamaki. "I want to personally thank the AutoAlliance employees and our local friends and suppliers who have worked so hard in preparation for this day."
The MAZDA6 offers the greatest choice of body styles, engine and transmissions of any vehicle in its class, all delivered with standard Zoom-Zoom. During its debut year, the MAZDA6 has received over 70 domestic and international awards.
AutoAlliance International is a joint venture between Ford Motor Company and Mazda Motor Corporation. Originally opened by Mazda in 1987, the plant has produced five different Mazda models in the ensuing years. The two new MAZDA6 vehicles are the fourth and fifth Mazda's produced in the facility. AAI has a modern flexible body shop that handles the complexity of producing all three MAZDA6 body styles with no production shutdown.

Liberating the Beast Within: Lexus Unleashes V8-Powered IS 430 Project
December 29, 2003
Source: Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc.
Lexus unveiled a one-off example of its IS 300 luxury sport sedan powered by a 4.3-liter V8 engine from a Lexus GS 430 in November 2003. Seeking to demonstrate the potential of the IS 300, Lexus commissioned Rod Millen Special Vehicles (RMSV) to build the car. The resulting "IS 430" has since completed its development program with RSMV and is now road-ready.
"We wanted to explore the performance possibilities of the IS 300," said Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager Denny Clements. "The marriage of our 4.3-liter V8 with the sporty IS 300 creates a classic muscle car."
The potent V8 engine was paired with a Getrag 6-speed manual transmission and lightweight flywheel, which drive the rear wheels through a stronger limited slip differential and GS 430 driveline components.
Total Performance Approach
The concept direction from Lexus required that handling be matched to the high-powered V8 while maintaining reasonable ride comfort and noise levels. TEIN springs and 16-way electronically adjustable shock absorbers work with the original IS 300 front suspension in addition to selected GS 430 rear suspension components, which help ensure durability against the higher torque of the 4.3-liter V8. Large, sticky Michelin Sport Cup tires on 18-inch Speed Star SSR alloy wheels put the power to the ground.
A similar approach was taken with the cooling system and brakes. A GS 430 radiator was fitted to provide ample cooling for the high-output engine. Large Brembo brakes with vented, cross-drilled rotors and four-piston aluminum calipers are there to arrest the newfound acceleration and speed of the IS 430.
"The standard IS 300 is a robust and well balanced sport sedan, so we thought it would respond well to the additional power of the Lexus V8 engine," said Rod Millen, president of RSMV. "With a package of complementary modifications, it has exceeded our expectations."
Although not a simple conversion, the V8 and 6-speed fit well within the compact IS 300 body structure. Curb weight is slightly higher than the standard IS, some of which is due to larger/stronger components needed to deal with the increased performance and some from the new audio/video system.
"Fitting the 4.3-liter V8 and six-speed manual transmission to the IS 300 was fairly straightforward," said Millen. "The larger challenge was to develop an electronic interface that would allow the V8 engine to work with the manual transmission and IS 300 body - something it was never designed to do."
RMSV's engineering team met the challenge with expertise developed through years of successful racing and building special vehicles for military and automotive clients. They focused on designing the electronics interface while simultaneously working through the mechanical conversion and enhancements. Numerous parts were specifically fabricated for the IS 430 including stainless steel exhaust headers and dual exhaust system, transmission adaptor, engine and transmission mounts, air intake system, wire harnesses and fluid connectors.
"Next Generation" Entertainment System
Pushing the IS 300 performance envelope was not limited to vehicle dynamics. Lexus also wanted to discover the potential of what might be termed a "next generation" in-vehicle entertainment system. Lexus naturally turned to its premium audio systems partner, Mark Levinson®, whose system engineers were eager to gain experience with their advanced system development work and receive feedback from users in the field.
The goals for the experimental system were the introduction of a discrete multi-channel 7.1 surround sound experience suitable for automotive use, complete system integration of audio and video, and advancement of sonic performance beyond previous OEM premium systems.
The result of their vision is a 20-speaker/24-channel, 720-watt* audio/video system using a proprietary DVD video player and removable 6.5-inch wide-screen video display. This prototype Mark Levinson® system is well suited to the expanded performance of the IS 430.
Functional Aggression
To complete the package, Chip Foose from Foose Design was employed to give the IS 430 a more aggressive yet functional appearance. Foose used subtle upgrades including a Rhys Millen Racing front lip spoiler and side skirts with a black over red exterior color scheme that emphasizes the wedge profile of the tightly drawn IS body. A mesh grille and gray headlamp treatment is used up front, and the taillights and rear badging are modified for a simpler look at the rear. The dual exhaust system's twin tailpipes not only improve performance, but also help advertise the potent 4.3-liter V8 engine.

The New BMW 6 Series Convertible Makes Its World Debut
December 8, 2003
Source: BMW of North America
Woodcliff Lake, NJ, December 8, 2003... Ever since the original 6 Series graced our roads enthusiasts were tantalized by the notion of a convertible version of that automotive icon. For enthusiasts everywhere the wait is over. The all-new 6 Series Convertible makes its world debut on January 5th at the 2004 NAIAS. Drop-dead looks, state-of-the-art technology, outstanding performance – these are the ingredients that await four passengers – unlimited driving pleasure with only the blue sky above. Top-up or top-down, the 6 Series Convertible is stunning. With the top up it captures the same purposeful, athletic nature of the 6 Series Coupe. With the top down another dimension of its personality is revealed.
Performance Befitting an Icon
The 645Ci Convertible is, first and foremost a BMW, so dynamic performance comes standard. It shares its 4.4-liter V8 with the 645Ci Coupe – horsepower is 325, maximum torque is 330 lb-ft. Infinite adjustment of virtually all relevant parameters such as valve timing (double-VANOS), valve lift (VALVETRONIC) and intake manifold runner length enables the engine to adjust instantly to all demands and requirements.
Combined with one of three 6-speed transmissions available on the new model – manual, STEPTRONIC automatic or BMW's Formula 1 inspired Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG). The new Convertible will reached 60 MPH in about six seconds on its way to an electronically limited top-speed of 155 MPH.
Of course, you expect the new 6 Series Convertible to offer handling to match its straight-line performance. Active Roll Stabilization (ARS) is standard to keep things on-the-level even when one’s driving gets enthusiastic. For those who care for an even finer edge, a Sport Package is available. In addition to sport seats and a sport steering wheel the package includes firmer shocks and springs and mixed-width 19-inch wheels with performance tires.
The Sport Package also includes BMW’s innovative Active Steering. Active Steering enhances the driving experience by improving precision and agility at lower speeds and also improving stability at higher speeds. Active Steering also features yaw rate control and is networked directly with the DSC system. It is thus able to intervene at an early point in time via the steering angle on the front wheels, stabilizing the car and allowing small corrections, which in turn reduces DSC intervention in the lower response range.
Four can ride in comfort and style… and bring their stuff.
The 645Ci Convertible offers all passengers comfort, luxurious features, and an ambience full of style and elegance. Power driver's and front passenger's seats are standard, including a triple memory function on the driver's seat, which adds the final touch of convenience to the ergonomic Dakota leather seats.
The rear-seat passengers also enjoy the very best in style and luxury: Although the roof is contoured and aerodynamic, like on the Coupe, even adults will enjoy ample headroom in back. Both rear seats are convenient to reach thanks to Easy Access on the driver's and front passenger's seat. Making it easier still, the seat belts are integrated into the front seats themselves, meaning that the passengers need not step around a seat belt when getting in to the rear seats or when getting out again.
Not only is there room for four passengers but also plenty of room for their luggage. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 10.6 cu. ft. with the roof open and 12.4 cu. ft. with the roof closed thanks to the variable roof compartment folds up conveniently with just one turn of your hand. This is sufficient space for one large and one small hard-shell suitcase or, respectively, two 46-inch golf bags plus a medium-sized hard-shell suitcase. And thanks to the ski-bag, which is part of the Cold Weather Package, the driver and passengers are able to take along two pairs of skis or a snowboard without limiting space available inside the passenger compartment.
Technology blends with the elegant interior.
Within the luxurious interior the driving experienced is enhanced by the standard DVD-based On-board Navigation System. This system is controlled, along with the sound system and others, by BMW’s innovative iDrive. The choice of sound systems includes the standard 8-speaker system or the optional Logic 7 system, which includes a 6-disc CD changer. BMW's highly innovative optional Head-Up Display is available as an option. It projects important driving information directly into the driver's line of vision. This includes the current road speed, navigation instructions, speed limits and feedback from the Check/Control. The virtual image provided by the Head-Up Display is presented in front of the driver seemingly on the road ahead, and allows the driver to view the information their eyes off the road. Unique convertible top provides Coupe-like noise and heat insulation.
Every convertible experience begins with the top. The newly developed roof on the 6 Series Convertible captures the look of the Coupe. It dampens exterior noise just as effectively as it braves the wind and weather, with a noise- and heat-insulating layer made of PUR plastic between the rubberized outer layer and the inner lining. The result is a very low noise level within the Convertible, allowing relaxed conversation even at high speeds.
The vertical rear window is made of glass and is electrically heated. The rear window can be electrically retracted completely into the luggage compartment bulkhead with the roof both open and closed. This creates a draft-free ventilation effect similar to that offered by a sliding roof in a Sedan. All side windows can also be fully retracted into the body of the car. With the top down the rear window can be raised allowing it to act as a wind deflector for all four passengers. Opening with full power operation, the soft top disappears completely within a matter of seconds beneath the firm cover on the roof compartment.
The driver is able to open or close the fully-automated top from the cockpit simply by pressing a button or turning the key in the door lock. You can even do this when setting off or in stop-and-go traffic up to a speed of 20 mph. All windows close in the process and the soft top locks and unlocks.
For a more detailed description of the all-new 6 Series Convertible go the BMW PressClub and come see it in the flesh at the 2004 NAIAS.

Mazda to Unveil Two-Seat Sports Car Concept and Hydrogen Rotary Engine at 2003 Tokyo Motor Show
October 14, 2003
Source: Mazda Motor Corp.
Mazda Motor Corporation zooms into the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show with the strongest line of production and concept cars in company history, including the world premier of the two-seat Ibuki concept, an open-top, lightweight sports car that hints at a possible design direction of a future Mazda Roadster. Joining the Ibuki concept on the stand are key environmental technologies being developed by Mazda such as the unique RENESIS hydrogen rotary engine (also a world premier) and the company's latest production models, including the all-new Mazda Axela.
The 37th Tokyo Motor Show will be held at the Makuhari Messe Convention Center in Chiba City and open to the public from Saturday, October 25th to Wednesday November 5th, 2003. Mazda president Hisakazu Imaki is scheduled to host a press briefing at the Mazda stand in the Makuhari Messe Central Hall on Wednesday, October 22nd from 14:10 to 14:30.
Mazda's theme for the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show, "Zoom-Zoom to the Future," highlights the continuing evolution of the company's Zoom-Zoom spirit, embodied by the consecutive successes scored by Mazda's new-generation vehicles: Atenza/Mazda6, Demio/Mazda2, Mazda RX-8 and the newly-introduced Axela/Mazda3 have all received critical acclaim from media and customers in markets around the world and are helping drive Mazda's current sales success. With this year's theme, Mazda is also emphasizing its intention to continue delivering "exciting and exhilarating driving experiences" to its customers.
Major Vehicle and Other Exhibits
Mazda 'Ibuki' concept
The Mazda Ibuki concept clearly showcases Mazda's current efforts in both design and technology as the development team works to further refine the company's famous lightweight, open-top sports car. The Ibuki concept (the name comes from a Japanese word that refers to "breathing new energy into" and "adding vigor") reaches back to its 1989 origins in is simple and clean design and hints towards one possible approach for a future Roadster/MX-5 model.
Powered by a MZR 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine, the Ibuki concept successfully realizes a super front-midship layout (as also found in the Mazda RX-8) that places all major components within the wheelbase. Compared with the layout in the current Mazda Roadster/MX-5, the engine is positioned approximately 400mm further to the rear, while the air conditioner unit is located behind the seats. Thanks to the super front-midship layout, yaw inertia moment has been greatly reduced, enhancing further the level of pure, fun drivability-oneness between car and driver-that has been central to the Roadster's ongoing success.
Mazda 'Kusabi' concept
Mazda Kusabi, which was first shown at the 2003 Frankfurt auto show, is based on the concept of a new "everyday sports sub-compact" offering unique values from its conventional counterparts. A small, four-seat, two-door coupe, the Kusabi is compact, economical and ecologically sound. The design is purposefully fun and almost aggressive for the segment. It is low and wide, with short front and rear overhangs. The highlight is the flat roof and overall wedge-shape that is the inspiration for the name - kusabi, means wedge in Japanese.
The concept features innovative packaging solutions such as the Twin-Lift Hatchback design that features dual hatches with two opening modes: a longitudinal hinge in the center of the roof allows individual opening of the hatches from either side of the car, or they can be opened together, from the rear, in the conventional hatchback manner.
Employing the 1.3-liter supercharged MZR engine equipped with an idle-stop mechanism, the Kusabi concept presents Mazda's proposals in terms of practicality, driving performance and environment- friendly features.
Mazda 'Washu' concept
First shown at the 2003 North American International Auto Show, the Mazda Washu concept (the name comes from the Japanese word for "eagle's wing) was developed as a calculated experiment into how customers interact with a vehicle's interior space. Low, sleek and well proportioned, Mazda's six-seat concept also works to tear down the barriers that traditionally separate sports cars and family cars. Just as the all-new Mazda RX-8 is a unique approach to the four-seat performance car, the new concept is an innovative approach to a six-seat configuration.
The Washu's interior incorporates concepts and forms found in traditional Japanese architecture, giving the cabin comfort and flexibility. In addition, innovative "airplane doors" and a deployable instrument panel equipped with a retractable steer-by-wire steering wheel greatly enhance ease of entry and exit. Taken together, these unique measures allow Mazda Washu to offer values not found in today's multi-purpose vehicles.
Mazda Roadster Turbo concept
The Roadster Turbo concept is a new twist on Mazda's best-selling sports car that has been developed as a limited-edition model to give customers a pure feeling of "oneness between car and driver" with additional mid-range performance. The turbochargerd1.8-liter DOHC engine delivers additional power and increased torque to improve acceleration, particularly in speeds from 40 to 80 kph.
The turbocharged engine has been tuned to retain the Roadsters smooth and linear power delivery, with a flat torque curve that offers consistent and strong torque from 2500 to 5500 rpm. Mazda Roadster Turbo also features enhanced drivetrain components including a taller final-drive ratio (now 4.100, up from 3.910) and an upgraded limited-slip differential. The Roadster Turbo's suspension has been upgraded with larger-diameter anti-roll bars, larger tires, stiffer dampers and springs rates 20 percent firmer than normally aspirated models, helping reduce pitch and roll. Overall, the Turbo's body has been lowered by 10 mm compared to the normal Roadsters.
Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE (Prototype)
This technological concept vehicle powered by the Mazda RENESIS hydrogen rotary engine is now undergoing running tests. The hydrogen version of RENESIS is the latest example of the company's efforts to satisfy the demand for both environment-friendliness and exhilarating performance. By making the most of the unique rotary-engine technologies, Mazda was able to develop this powerplant as one proposal for alternative-energy vehicle technologies aimed at a future hydrogen-based society.
In addition to direct hydrogen injection into the intake chambers via two electronically-controlled injectors per rotor, the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE features a dual-fuel system allowing one-touch switching between either hydrogen or gasoline, promoting the car's versatility as a hydrogen fuel infrastructure is developed.
Other environmental-friendly features applied to the vehicle include a plant-based plastic for interior parts and an application of three layer wet paint system. Mazda is also presenting advanced technologies including a hybrid system with electric torque assist and start-stop technology, and a turbocharger with electric motor assistance-technologies that will contribute to future enhancement of hydrogen rotary engine performance.
MZR 2.0 PZEV engine
The gasoline engine mounted in the Axela/Mazda3 for the US market clears Partial Zero Emissions Vehicles (PZEV) standards - the world's strictest emissions standard for gasoline engines - adopted by "Green States" in the US.
New MZR-CD engine
This newly-developed, next-generation diesel engine achieves a superb balance between power, fuel efficiency and quiet operation. Innovative technologies such as a catalyzed diesel particulate filter and improved fuel efficiency achieve a significant reduction in emissions of PM and NOx, and black smoke is reduced to virtually zero.
Pre-crash safety technologies
These advanced technologies include front and rear sensors for crash prediction, and advanced measures to minimize harm to occupants in the event of a collision. When an accident is predicted, the system automatically tightens the seatbelts, applies the brakes and adjusts headrest position.
Safe-driving support with regard to fatigue
Safe-driving support includes measures such as route-selection suited to the individual driving style and how the driver experiences the burden of driving, and appropriate delivery of information and alerts in accordance with driver fatigue as measured in real time by a new algorithm.
Mazda Axela/Mazda3
Following Atenza/Mazda6, New Demio/Mazda2 and Mazda RX-8, Axela/Mazda3 is the fourth member of Mazda's new-generation line-up and incorporates all the outstanding merits and lessons learned in the development of the previous three to fully embody Mazda's brand DNA and the Zoom-Zoom spirit. With its highly balanced dynamic performance, Axela offers assured peace of mind and driving excitement at the same time.
The bold design is attractive from the very first glance, while its refined sophistication continues to please the eye over time. The four- and five-door versions have noticeable design differences, yet both fascinate with their style. New-generation craftsmanship realizes a new standard of quality which enhances both the delight of ownership and the pleasure of driving, while the efficient packaging achieves true versatility in practical use, excellent maneuverability, and a sleek exterior appearance. In addition, Axela offers world-class safety plus superbly clean performance, proven by the Japanese U-LEV certification awarded to all models. Axela's unprecedented values set an entirely new global standard for compact cars.
BMW's New X3, 6 Series, 5 Series and X5 at Frankfurt
September 10, 2003
Source: BMW of North America
WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Following BMW's aggressive market offensive initiative, BMW will debut several new and updated models at this year's Frankfurt (IAA) Auto Show. They include an all-new BMW SAV, the X3, the new 6 Series coupe, the 5-series sedan, and the updated X5 SAV.
The all-new X3 Sports Activity Vehicle
The exciting new X3 Sports Activity Vehicle, stands out with its unprecedented levels of agility and versatility that can only be found in a BMW SAV. Its modern design language with interacting concave and convex surfaces gives the X3 a youthful and fresh appearance. In typical BMW fashion, this new BMW will feature new technologies to offer greater safety and performance.
The X3 SAV will be available in two versions-the X3 2.5i and the X3 3.0i. The former is powered by a 2.5-liter, 184-horsepower inline 6-cylinder engine and the latter, motivated by a 3.0-liter version that provides 225 enthusiastic horsepower. Both models come standard with a six-speed manual transmission with a five-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission available as an option.
The outstanding levels of both traction and agility delivered by the X3 are due in no small part to its new xDrive, BMW's latest all-wheel drive system. This new all-wheel drive system sets new standards in agility for all-wheel drive vehicles. It immediately recognizes traction loss and can respond by changing power distribution among the four drive wheels-often before the wheels begin to lose their grip. This applies to dry-weather road conditions as well to significantly minimizing both understeer and oversteer in aggressive maneuvers.
The BMW X3 will be available in early 2004. Visit www.bmwusa.com/newx3.
The all-new 6 Series coupe
An icon is reborn. The previous 6 Series Coupe (1977-1989) had left such an impression with automotive enthusiasts worldwide that BMW not only wanted to exceed their expectations with a modern rendition, but looked to surpass sporting coupe standards in every conceivable way. To that end, BMW introduces the new 645Ci-a premium coupe that offers performance and luxury with the unusual mix of BMW driving pleasure and unparalleled technology.
Powering this new coupe is BMW's potent and efficient 325-horsepower 4.4-liter VALVETRONIC V8 engine. Transferring this power to the rear wheels is one of three available transmissions-a smooth-shifting six-speed manual gearbox, a six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission, and a six-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG). The SMG, which first debuted in the M3 sports coupe, combines the thrill of manual transmissions with the convenience of full automatic shifting. Clutch actuation is handled entirely by SMG, and upshifts and downshifts can be toggled manually with the steering-wheel- mounted buttons or shift lever mounted on the center console. A selectable "Drive" mode provides completely automatic shifting.
Also available on the new 6 Series is BMW's Active Steering system, Active Cruise Control, Head Up Display, and glass panoramic roof. These new technologies offer greater safety and driving pleasure.
Active Steering, part of the Sport Package in the US, provides a variable steering ratio, which tailors how quickly the front wheels react to inputs made by the driver. In slow-speed situations, such as when driving in congested areas, Active Steering quickens the response of the front wheels for evasive maneuvering or while parking. At faster highway speeds, the steering response is more relaxed, making for a more comfortable and stable driving experience. The result is a steering system that meets the needs of your driving environment with no sacrifices in performance or comfort.
The Head Up Display, as its name implies, projects important vehicle information on the windshield with a focal point that is in the line of sight with the road. The driver can select the type of information he or she wants displayed including navigation instructions and vehicle speed. This allows the driver's eyes to stay on the road, greatly increasing safety if an unexpected road event occurs.
The 6 Series coupe will feature a large panoramic glass roof. This is a two-part roof that includes a powered inner sunshade that can retract partially, or fully. The power glass panel also tilts upward at the rear, allowing air to circulate throughout the interior cabin.
The New 5
The all-new, fifth generation 5 Series will again be offered in three versions, two featuring BMW's award-winning inline-six engines and the other featuring BMW's ground-breaking V8. The 525i will feature a 2.5-liter inline six that produces 184-horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque while the 530i's 3.0-liter offers 225 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque. Finally, the 545i will feature a new 4.4-liter V8 engine that uses double-VANOS variable valve- timing, VALVETRONIC throttle-less engine control and infinitely variable intake manifold runner-length control to produce 325 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission will be available on all three versions. A six-speed automatic and a six-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) will also be available.
Like the new 6 Series, the new 5 sedan's body makes extensive use of aluminum to form an extremely stiff yet lightweight platform. This leads to better performance and fuel economy and an ideal front/rear weight distribution, in a car that is also larger than its predecessor. The rigid chassis and tuned suspension are made entirely of aluminum.
The 5 Series also features Active Front Steering and Active Cruise Control (ACC). For the first time in the 5 Series, Adaptive Headlights will be available. With this system, the two bi-xenon headlights are controlled in real-time as a function of the steering wheel angle, yaw rate and road speed, illuminating the road ahead in a bend. As an additional active safety enhancement, the new 5 Series features Adaptive Brakelights. When the driver applies the brakes hard, or upon activation of the ABS, the rear taillights join the brakelights at the same intensity to signal following vehicles.
The new 5 Series will be available for sale in the U.S. market later this month.
The BMW X5
BMW's engineers and designers have thoroughly upgraded the athletic X5 giving this outstanding vehicle a wide range of both technical innovations and design updates. The new, intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive system, new and even more powerful engines extending all the way to the new X5 4.8is, and new design elements highlight this model update. As a result, the X5 will remain the perfect vehicle for the sporting driver seeking to combine the magnificent handling and driving dynamics of a BMW with the commanding driving position and wide range of purposes this SAV offers.
The 2004 X5 will be available with two new powertrain choices. In the X5 4.4i, a new 4.4-liter VALVETRONIC V8 engine with 315 horsepower is standard. The X5 3.0i will continue with its 225-horsepower inline six, but will now benefit from the new six-speed manual gearbox, as well as the new xDrive all- wheel drive system.
Numerous new and proven equipment features also contribute to superior driving safety in the X5. As an example, the available Adaptive Xenon Headlights ensure optimum illumination of the road ahead in all kinds of bends (available in Spring 2004). This "intelligent" system uses the wide range of data collected by the chassis and suspension control units to guide the headlight beams along the course of the road. New bi-Xenon headlights, in turn, ensure bright illumination and are standard on the 8-cylinder models and available as an option on the six-cylinder X5s.
The enthusiast using the superior power and performance of the new X5 to tow a trailer will also benefit from another unique safety feature: the trailer stability control offered on the new model. This control system prevents the trailer from building up an increasing pendulum motion by recognizing those dangerous movements and intervening with the brakes to help reinstate a safe and stable driving condition.

IAA 2003: Golf V GTI Concept
September 09, 2003
Source: Volkswagen AG
Wolfsburg, Germany - The Golf GTI is considered to be the icon of sporty compact vehicles. Not only that: The letters GTI have become the symbol of a complete class of vehicles and the epitome of compact handling dynamics. Now Volkswagen presents at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt the next stage of evolution for this icon of driving pleasure: A Golf GTI concept of the fifth generation. It personifies the sheer culture of the GTI philosophy. Powered by a completely new FSI turbo engine with 147 kW / 200 hp, the two door GTI is independent like never before and closes, both conceptionally as well as visually, the circle to the legendary founding vision of Grand Tourisme Injection: The Golf GTI of the year 1976.
GTI Concept
28 years ago Volkswagen presented at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt the first GTI - and the legend began.
The world premiere of the first Golf GTI was in 1975 at the same position and also as a concept vehicle. In June 1976, series production began. What happened thereafter is the making of a legend. At the start, the vehicles were finished in either silver or red and were originally intended as just a limited edition of 5000 GTIs. But it turned out very differently. With a powerful 81 kW / 110 hp output and top speed of 182 km/h, the Golf GTI won a new clientele and established the GTI class as a compact sports car. From the original 5000 vehicles, more than four generations and more than 1.5 million Golf GTIs have evolved to date.
The concept emulates consciously the stylistic characteristics of the first GTI generation; which means, of course, that it is finished in red with black contrasting features.
With the Golf GTI concept, as shown in Frankfurt, Volkswagen is now demonstrating how GTI history will develop. The concept consciously emulates the GTI of the first generation. Therefore it has to be red, it has to have a black radiator grille, and it has to rise above the other models of the series with substantial modifications. After all, the first GTI also distinguished itself with a markedly independent appearance: The black bumpers and flared wings, the black side bump strips, the black rear window frame and the characteristic red trim around the black radiator grille of the original GTI are so clear today as if the vehicle had just yesterday been presented in Frankfurt.
As with all leading examples, the Golf GTI was copied by many. The models came in many shapes and forms, such as GSI, GTE, XRi, GTX, and disappeared from the market long ago. Not one of them came even close to the comparable status of a Golf GTI.
From this unmistakable GTI tradition evolved the new concept vehicle. Based on the majestic dynamics of the new model generation, the engineers and designers developed a GTI that accentuates the original version, whilst paving the way to the future with an extremely sporty, extremely independent and extremely well proven presence.
GTI Exterior Design
The exterior design - The Golf GTI concept, like the roadster concept R, shows dominant V-shaped flowing lines at the front end.
The concept combines traditional GTI features with the front end design of a future generation. Inline with the concept R roadster, presented on 1st September, the GTI also has a striking V motive in the design of the front end. The bonnet features an arrow shaped modulation, which continues the flowing lines in the area of the front skirt to form a frame for the shield-like, highly polished, black radiator grille. The radiator grille features a honeycomb mesh and is surrounded, characteristically for a GTI, by a red trim strip.
Beneath this are three large air inlets in the bumper that supply the new FSI turbo engine with fresh air. As in the radiator grille, each of the inlets have mesh panels with a honeycomb structure.
Furthermore, in best GTI style, the underside area of the vehicle features deep black body parts in the way of sill panels and end elements in the front and rear skirts. The sill panels are drawn high into the wheelarches to act as protection against stone chips.
In contrast to the Trendline, Comfortline and Sportline versions, the rear end makes its mark characteristically for a GTI with an even more striking roof spoiler and chrome twin tail pipes.
GTI Interior Design
The interior design - cult status? This came about thanks to the exterior, the drive technology and the interior. The GTI concept of 2003 takes this history further.
The original GTI did not just become a great hit with the fans due to its performance, its agile handling properties and exterior design, even its individually designed interior set new standards thanks to an ergonomic and sporty style. Details such as the sports seats, with legendary criss-cross design on black background, the three-spoked sports steering wheel or the gearstick knob shaped like a golf ball were the counterpoints that attracted a new sporty clientele.
Time flies: More noble than ever and catapulted almost three decades into the future, the GTI concept carries on this dynamic style further. With anthracite headliner and anthracite coloured pillar trim panels, the interior is characterised by markedly high attention to detail. As the doors are opened, the journey therefore starts in a new but familiar GTI world.
The sports seating features black matt and anthracite coloured suede and, in addition, the interior is refined with brushed aluminium.
The entry step trim, pedals and floor panels of the concept are all finished in brushed aluminium. As an anti-slip measure, the aluminium is enhanced with rubber strips. The completely new leather sports seats (contoured single seats are also installed in the rear) have an ergonomically perfect and inviting appeal just by looking at them. Take a seat and the appeal is confirmed. The very high backrests, in particular, and adjustable head restraints, integrated here optically, create an ambience of extraordinary sporty functionality. Detailed perfection is a bonus: GTI logos are embroidered into the head restraints. The upholstery trim of the seats has also been newly designed: The main material used is black, fine suede. Running across this are narrow strips of perforated suede; the front surface of the head restraints is covered with this on the inner area.
As with the first GTI generation of 1976, this GTI concept of 2003 is also distinguished by a three spoke steering wheel with metal elements. The leather steering wheel features a brushed aluminium element in each of the spokes. A further GTI logo is embroidered in the vertical spoke. The moulded grips of the steering wheel, that is on the left and right of the cross spoke extensions, are covered in suede, similar to that used in the world of racing.
The instruments in the vehicle were also revamped. Their graphic layout and design give an image of technical precision in its highest form. Each of the round main instruments is surrounded by a ring of machined aluminium. The rev counter mounted on the left has an ample range up to 8000 rpm, hitting the red line area from 7000 rpm. This clear overview is continued with the scaling of the speedometer.
With the sum of all features, this GTI concept rises above the more "civil" Golf version in a way reminiscent of the original GTI. And with that a clear statement is again made: A declaration towards the forever young GTI icon.
GTI Technology
The constructive basis of the GTI concept is provided by the ultimate in its class today - The new Golf generation.
The constructive basis of the compact sports car is the fifth generation, 22 million bestseller Golf. The two door version, though, is more striking than ever in terms of the design compared to the four door, with a much higher waistline at the rear.
Technically, the GTI concept features all of the advantages of the Golf series that are generally set as the standard in its class. Included here are the extremely high quality bodywork, the new safety running gear designed for driving dynamics (including ESP and dual brake assist system), the new electro-mechanical steering, the efficient technology of fuel stratified injection (FSI) - enhanced in the case of the GTI with a turbocharger, and the spectacular direct selection gearbox (DSG).
The GTI always differentiated itself technically from the "civil" models; and the concept vehicle is no different - it is harder, stronger, faster and still comfortable.
In contrast to the standard production model, the concept vehicle naturally has numerous differences. With the high output and GTI philosophy in mind, the car features a substantially stiffer, but still comfortable, sporty running gear. Newly designed 18 inch alloy wheels, sporting wide tyres, provide the majestic contact with the road and ensure that the larger sized braking system, with red finished brake calipers, is well accommodated. The exhaust system is completely new and features twin tail pipes.
Will the future of the GTI make it to the present? Without question. The new GTI will come. Paris 2004 would be a good time.
The question is now will the concept make it to series GTI production? The signs are extremely good. Relevant tests and preparations are underway. And the product launch date? Let's just say: If it's high-tech and outstanding performance, with the GTI philosophy in mind, that people are looking for, they will find it all at the 2004 Motor Show in Paris. The stage will then be set to make what we can expect of the GTI in the future, a GTI that we can have now.
Mercedes-Benz Launches New-Generation CLK Cabriolet
August 19, 2003
Source: Mercedes-Benz USA
SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz, the only automaker that has offered uninterrupted availability of convertible vehicles since the 1950s, is introducing its next-generation CLK Cabriolet to the U.S. market. Based on the stylish lines of the new-generation CLK coupe launched last year, the 2004 CLK Cabriolet features a fully automatic soft top and sensor-controlled pop-up roll bars disguised as two rear head restraints. Not only is the convertible top fully automatic for the first time on the CLK, but it can now also be operated remotely with the key. While the CLK Cabriolet can provide open-air driving pleasure at the touch of a button, its multi-layer convertible top is also designed to ensure year-round comfort and low interior noise.
As with the CLK coupe, Mercedes will offer three fun-to-drive Cabriolet models in the U.S. market. The CLK320 is powered by a 215-horsepower, 3.2-liter V6, while the new CLK500 uses a 302-hp, 5.0-liter V8 like the SL500 roadster and the larger CL500 coupe. In addition to the larger-displacement V8 engine, the CLK500 Cabriolet is equipped exclusively with 17-inch AMG wheels and a body design package, plus larger brakes and additional detail differences from the CLK320.
Later in the 2004 model year, Mercedes-Benz will add a Cabriolet version of its high-performance CLK55 AMG. Powered by a 362-horsepower, 5.5-liter hand-built V8 engine, the CLK55 AMG brings even stronger acceleration to the Cabriolet family. All CLK models use a five-speed adaptive automatic transmission with TouchShift that allows manual-style gear selection by pushing the gear lever left to downshift or right to upshift.
The latest CLK line is identified by a new version of the traditional Mercedes coupe/roadster front-end design, placing the three-pointed star in the center of a low, wide grill that blends with the now-signature Mercedes-Benz face. What appear to be four lights are actually two ellipses that form a single unit on each side.
The original CLK cabriolet's ability to carry four people and their luggage helped the car succeed in a market segment that has since seen other luxury cabriolets disappear. The current CLK is even roomier and more practical than its predecessor, adding rear headroom, elbow / hip room and knee room.
One of the World's Safest Convertibles
The CLK line features the latest Mercedes-Benz safety technology, including dual-stage front airbags, rear side airbags and -- on Cabriolet models -- new head/thorax sidebags in the front. Impact severity is the primary factor in determining the deployment force of the front airbags. However, deployment of the front passenger seat airbag is further influenced by sensors in the seat cushion that can classify the occupant weight, or by the sensors in the BabySmart system that inhibit deployment when the BabySmart child seat is properly installed. A full array of Mercedes safety inventions are also present, including ABS anti-lock brakes, straight-line traction control, ESP stability control, and Brake Assist.
If any one of the CLK's airbags or seatbelt tensioners deploy, the standard Tele Aid system immediately generates a direct call to an emergency response center over a dedicated cellular line with redundant antennas. The vehicle's location is provided to the response specialist at the other end by GPS satellite transponders. If needed, emergency response can be summoned immediately, with exact vehicle location, plus full information on the car model and color for quick recognition by emergency services.
High-End Luxury In A Mid-Luxury Cabriolet
The CLK interior is stylishly sporty, rich and well-appointed. The instrument panel uses an aesthetically pleasing mix of analog gauges and vertical LCD bar graphs for the fuel gauge and the coolant temperature. The lines of the dashboard are complemented by the soft-touch surface, providing a luxurious feel and high-quality appearance. The interior design, exclusive to the CLK, is practical as well as inviting. Automatic front seatbelt presenters offer convenience and comfort. When the front occupants close their doors, an electric motor on each side extends an arm that holds the buckle, making it easier for the occupants to reach the belts. The belt presenters retract once the seat belts are buckled.
Standard luxury features include dual-zone electronic climate control with a sun sensor to optimize air distribution and a separate blower for the rear seats to ensure optimal comfort for each passenger. A Bose® premium sound system uses eight strategically located speakers and digital processing to actively adjust system output to compensate for ambient noise. The 10-way adjustable power front seats are unique to the CLK line. When activated by the driver through the settings in the multi-functional display, the seat and/or steering column will automatically move to create more space for easier entry to or exit from the vehicle.
The CLK steering wheel comes from the SL coupe/roadster and is power-adjustable for tilt and reach. Rocker buttons on its spokes provide an easy and convenient way to control many of the car's systems -- the display in the center of the speedometer is linked to illuminated buttons on the steering wheel, allowing the driver to view the selected radio station, a personal phone book or even navigation instructions when the optional COMAND system with GPS navigation is ordered.
Standard rain-sensing windshield wipers, entrance lights and auto-dimming mirrors add an extra layer of luxury that helps take some of the stress out of daily driving. The bi-level glove box accommodates the optional 6-disc CD changer, leaving a lower shelf for personal items. The center console houses an adjustable-height armrest that also doubles as a storage compartment.
High-Tech Options
Optional Distronic radar-based cruise control can maintain a set distance from the vehicle traveling in front. Another new option for the CLK line is a Keyless Go system, which unlocks and starts the car at the touch of specific buttons on the exterior door handles and the gearshift knob.
Bi-xenon high-intensity gas-discharge headlights (HID) -- which employ a shutter to switch the high-intensity xenon bulb from low beam to high beam -- are available on both CLK models. These state-of-the-art lights also include dynamic headlight range adjusters that adjust the angle of the beam in response to the car's body movement and a high-pressure water jet wash system.
The optional COMAND system integrates the display and controls for GPS satellite navigation, the premium audio system and the optional cellular telephone. An optional voice-operated system controls both the major telephone functions and the audio system. Other options, including Parktronic parking assist, ventilated seats, an electronic trunk closer and a wood/leather steering wheel, bring even more premium-level luxury to the new CLK.
Thoroughbred Chassis
The fun-to-drive CLK line uses a strut front suspension with split lower links, and the rear suspension is a refined version of the patented multi-link design used on all Mercedes passenger cars. A new, lighter rack-and-pinion steering system has replaced the previous recirculating ball system to provide greater steering precision and a sportier feel. The CLK also features speed- sensitive parameter steering, which provides ample power-steering assist for easy parking and low-speed maneuvers, then reduces the boost at speed for optimal road feel.
All CLK models feature "staggered" wheels and tires (wider, lower-profile tires on the rear). The standard setup for the CLK320 includes seven-spoke 16 x 7.0-inch front wheels with 205/55 HR16 tires and 16 x 8.0-inch rear wheels with 225/50 HR16 tires. The CLK500 uses larger 17 x 7.5-inch front wheels with 225/45 ZR17 tires and 17 x 8.5-inch rear wheels with 245/40 ZR17 tires.

The model offensive continues: New 911 GT2 for 2004
August 12, 2003
Source: Porsche
Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, of Stuttgart, Germany has taken a further step forward in its current model offensive. This most powerful version of the 911 now has even higher performance and is the sixth launch this year, following the 911 GT3, Carrera 4S Cabriolet, 911 Turbo Cabriolet, GT3 RS and the 40th anniversary 911 model. The 911 GT2 available when the 2004 model year starts has a power output of 483 bhp (355 kW), an increase of 21 hp (15 kW) on the previous model, making it even more athletic and faster. The GT2 will be available from Porsche Centers from October on.
The increase in performance has been achieved by detailed improvements to the electronic engine management maps, yielding an increase of 20 Nm in maximum torque to 640 Nm between 3,500 rpm and 4,500 rpm. With a power-to-weight ratio of 4.06 kilograms per kilowatt, it now takes the rear-wheel drive GT2 only 4 seconds to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h and only 12.5 seconds from 0 to 200 km/h. Its maximum speed is 319 km/h, making the GT2 for the 2004 model year 4 km/h faster than its predecessor. Its exhaust emission values are similar to those of the 911 Turbo and it complies easily with the stringent D4 standards. These are equivalent to the EURO 4 standard test limits that will not become mandatory until January 1, 2005. As a matter of course, the GT2 also satisfies the US LEV standard.
Extreme sports-car performance was a clear priority when this powerful turbocharged model was developed. This is why, in addition to the power output increase, the front and rear suspension has been optimized as well, with modified springs/shock absorbers and brake system. The car now has even more sensitive four-channel ABS for effective anti-lock braking.
The boldly styled, aerodynamically advanced rear wing is available in unpainted carbon fiber upon request. It weighs 2.8 kilograms less and is standard on the Clubsport version. The door mirror housings and air output slats in the front apron panel feature a carbon look as part of this equipment package.
The 2004 GT2 generation sets itself apart with the new GT3-style wheels, which are 8.5 inches wide at the front and 12 inches at the rear. They are shod with size 235/40 R 18 tires at the front and 315/30 R 18 at the rear.
The new GT2 also comes with the "Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake" (PCCB) system as standard. The ceramic brake disks weigh 50 percent less than similarly sized metal disks, thus reducing the car's unsprung weight by some 18 kilograms. "PCCB" disks are available as an optional extra for the 911 Turbo, GT3 (with naturally aspirated engine) and Carrera 4S.
The list price for the 911 GT2 will be 159,100 Euro (excluding VAT and country-specific requirements). The selling price to the customer will be 184,674 Euro including VAT in Germany and 191,700 US $ (plus tax) in the US.
'Mazda Kusabi' Design Concept to Debut at 2003 Frankfurt Auto Show

Mazda Motor Corporation will unveil an all-new Zoom-Zoom concept car at the 60th International Motor Show (IAA)* in Frankfurt in early September 2003. The Mazda Kusabi - a small, lightweight, diesel-powered sports car concept - clearly indicates Mazda's current direction in its effort to expand its future presence in the compact car segment. The Mazda Kusabi will debut alongside the all-new Mazda3 (known as Mazda Axela in Japan), which will also make its auto show debut in Frankfurt, prior to its sales launch into key global markets beginning in the fourth quarter of 2003.
Mazda Kusabi
Mazda Kusabi is a true design concept that showcases Mazda efforts to further develop innovative access systems, packaging solutions and its own, unique design language. Kusabi, when translated from Japanese, means "wedge," but can also mean "making way for something new." And in this sense, Mazda Kusabi presents a new direction for Mazda compact cars, presented as a small, modern sports car with a stylish and aggressive exterior, environmentally friendly 1.6-liter common-rail diesel engine, and driving characteristics that can make everyday city commuting and driving fun and exciting.
The exterior design is highlighted by sharp press lines extending from the bonnet through the body sides to the rear of the car, large wheels and pronounced fenders, and an undeniable "reverse wedge" extending from the A-pillars rearward. The result is a stylish and aggressive sports car concept equipped with a revolutionary tailgate mechanism that allows easy access to the luggage compartment, improving overall functionality for the everyday use.
The Frankfurt Auto Show debut of the Mazda3s will be the public's first opportunity to see the newest Mazda, the Mazda3, which brings together balanced dynamic performance, evocative styling, and high-quality craftsmanship and finish. The Mazda3 is the fourth, new-generation Mazda and follows closely behind the launch of the all-new Mazda6, Mazda2 and Mazda RX-8. Mazda will release additional Mazda3 product detail - including information pertaining to body styles, packages and powertrains - at the 2003 IAA. The vehicle will go on sale in Europe in the fall and will be introduced into key markets through the fourth quarter of calendar year 2003 and into the first quarter of 2004.
