If your motor stays too cold it will operate inefficiently and your heater will function poorly, but if it gets too hot your motor can be severely damaged. The job of Cutlass thermostats is to regulate engine temperature. While factory Cutlass thermostats usually work well, they are a common wear and tear item that will fail over time. A thermostat is a cleverly designed device. It is essentially a temperature sensitive valve. When your engine is cold the valve stays shut, keeping the coolant circulating in the motor so that it heats up quickly. But when the engine temperature reaches the thermostats preset level, the valve opens allowing coolant to circulate through the radiator to prevent overheating. It is possible to change to a higher or lower temperature Cutlass thermostat depending on your requirements. If you want more heat from your heater, a higher temperature thermostat is often a great way to go. However if you want to reduce the chances of overheating in hot climates, running a lower temperature thermostat is preferable.
