Lift supports are a lot like shock absorbers. They are gas charged cylinders that can telescope in and out to allow your hatch to open and close. The amount of pressure in the cylinder is determined by the weight that they have to support. When the weight overcomes the pressure it allows the lift gate to shut. Over time internal seals in the struts wear out and allow some of the pressure to release. This causes issues with the tailgate staying open. If your struts are getting tired, it is affordable and easy to replace them with a new set of tailgate lift supports.
