If you do any kind of serious off-roading that can potentially damage your undercarriage and you want to prevent just that from happening (or if you just want your ride to look cool), a skid plate will get the job done. A proper F150 skid plate will help protect your chassis, including the engine, oil pan, and transfer case, from incurring any damage while out on the trails or on the street. A F150 skid plate is cheap insurance against a battered underbody, and will add a tough look to your ride that is just begging for attention.

Although tough, many F150 skid plates are made of lightweight materials such as aluminum and stainless steel so as to not add any unneeded weight to your vehicle. Those that are made of steel are generally built for extreme conditions where damage would otherwise be imminent, such as differential skid plates that are repeatedly hit during off-roading excursions. Some F150 skid plates are made for street use and are primarily designed to offer lowered vehicles some undercarriage protection against rocks and large grooves in the road.
