An aftermarket engine management system is a necessity when keeping a modified engine running cleanly. Engine management systems can adjust the air-to-fuel ratio, ignition timing and idle speed, making sure your engine is running cleanly, smoothly and safely. The stresses put on an engine through modification are minimized with a properly set-up engine management system. By keeping your engine running optimally under all sorts of conditions, you are assuring yourself increased performance and reliability.

Certain engine management systems can control the amount of boost your turbocharger produces via regulating the wastegate. Electronic boost control can offer the driver the ability to change boost pressure without having to open the hood and adjust the wastegate manually. This ensures on-the-go excitement every time you want some extra push, without having to leave your seat!
Q: What is an engine management system? Why buy one? How does an engine management system different from a Piggy Back Programmer?
A: An engine management system is essentially the brain of your vehicle. Aftermarket engine management systems replace your OEM computer (ECU) with a performance version that gives you tunability so that you can maximize the power of your vehicle and optimize the other aftermarket components you have added to your ride. While your stock ECU may be fine for daily driving, it is programmed with a large margin for safety built-in, which in turn sacrifices performance. An engine management system will let you push the limits a little more, while still staying in a safe tuning range to drastically improve performance throughout the entire power band. Engine management systems are also easily uninstalled if you ever decide to sell your ride or just want a milder tune.

The main difference between an engine management system and a piggy back programmer is that the engine management system completely replaces the ECU, while a piggy back tunes through the stock ECU. This usually means that piggy back setups have limited tuning capabilities due to limited access in the stock ECU from encryption and other security features. Piggy backs due usually maintain the stock safety features of the OEM ECU which means there is less risk of destroying your motor. With engine management systems you gain complete control of all tuning parameters making them the superior device if you want to really dial in your vehicle. However, it is important to find a competent tuner and utilize a chassis dyno in order to carefully tune your vehicle and prevent premature engine failure.
