Internal combustion requires four things; compression, spark, oxygen (air) and fuel. However you can't just put all four components together and expect to have a running engine. Each item has to be carefully calibrated to create an engine that produces power and runs smoothly. On modern vehicles, computers are responsible for setting the mixture (combination of air and fuel). But most factory computers can only adjust the mixture within a small window. Adding components that improve air flow and power often cause the mixture to become leaner than the computer can adjust for.
