Early vehicles did not run air filters at all. At most they used screens and shields to keep the dirt at bay, however these crude methods weren't very effective, and as a result motors did not last very long. By the 1950s air filter technology began to improve with oil-bath style filters gaining popularity on OEM vehicles. Today most vehicles rely on paper style elements.
